Researchers identify key osteoarthritis similarities in dogs and humans

May 28, 2019

A new research review paper in Nature Reviews Rheumatology identifies important similarities between osteoarthritis (OA) in humans and OA in dogs, and and clearly demonstrates that a One Medicine research approach for this disease could help both species.

The researchers suggest that better alignment of clinical studies for canine veterinary patients and human patients could provide the OA research field with 'a wealth of research material and knowledge', including helping researchers better understand the genetics of the disease, and providing a good natural model for studying OA progress over the long-term. The importance of awareness of benefits and limitations of this approach is also highlighted.

The new paper can be accessed at the journal website here, and is also linked to in our One Medicine Library
